Firstly introduce yourself? Where are you from and what do you do?
Hola ! I'm Laila from London Town and i'm a 23 year old PR & Communications student currently working freelance.
How long have you been natural?I've been completely natural for 8 months but prior to that I grew out my hair for 2 years before cutting my relaxed hair off.
If you have transitioned to natural what prompted you more from processed to natural hair?I'd always assumed that the only way to go natural was to cut my relaxed hair off completely which was something i would never have done. I came across the world of transitioning ladies via Fotki.comand i was pretty much sold but still had my reservations. I decided to get one more relaxer while i thought about it and that was when i experienced my first bad relaxer as well as my last.
How did you transition, did you big chop? I transitioned by looking after and styling the two textures for 2 years before finally cutting the ends off.
What were the main reasons for your choice to wear your natural hair? I got tired of my relaxed hair and missed my natural hair, i got my first relaxer when i was around 13.
What are your earliest hair memories? How did these memories influence your hair journey today? I remember being around 5 and sitting in a chair at my mother's hair salon in Ghana having my hair put in twist, i loved having my hair done and watching others get their's done too. I think that's where my passion for hair care comes from, even when i was relaxed i followed my care regimen religiously.
What does having naturalhair mean to you? Having natural hair to me is a sign of complete self acceptance.. it's a direct tie to my ancestors. No matter how i choose to style and wear it, it's on my terms by my own standards.
How do you keep your hair looking so good? Keeping it simple and, consistent has been the key for me. I Deep condition using any thick deep conditioner or cholesterol and mixing it with some honey, oils and coconut milk, then i shampoo wash using Schwarzkopf Gliss Oil Nutritive, and detangle using Tresemme Naturals weekly in that order. And that's about it! i moisturise when needed and treat my monthly with some luxury hair products.
What products do you use in your hair? My favourite products will have to be; Pure shea butter whipped with some oils , Anita Grant Rhassoul Clay deep conditioner Tresemme naturals, Cantu Shea butter Leave-in, Blended Beauty hair oil.
What are your go to hair style? My go to style is an updo!, whether it's on loose hair or twisted hair, my updo's never let me down. All i do it grab a few hair pins and go with the flow.
How do you protect your hair in the winter months? In general I keep my hair in protective styles 90% of the time to reduce mechanical breakage and it also helps me to retain moisture in my hair more, this always helps in the colder months where hair tends to dry out faster.
Do you have any advice for women starting out on there natural journey? Every journey has it's ups and downs but always keep your eyes on the prize and remember everyone is different and therefore our individual journeys are unique to us. It's ok to admire other people's hair but learn to love your own first.
